Struggles Become Lessons

Every struggle is a lesson, every lesson a step toward growth—for students and teachers alike.

When I look back at my school days, I can’t help but smile. I was only in grade 7 when I began teaching others. Life was very different then—no internet, no Google, no YouTube tutorials waiting to guide me. It was just me, my books, and an unshakable determination to figure things out.

Whenever I got stuck on a math problem, I didn’t have the luxury of searching for instant answers. My only option was to sit with it. I would try one method, then another—scribbling, erasing, and starting again. Sometimes the problem seemed impossible. But I didn’t give up. If I couldn’t solve it that day, I would close my notebook, sleep over it, and return the next morning. More often than not, the solution would come to me, almost as if my brain had been quietly working in the background all night.

That feeling of finally cracking a problem after hours—or even days—of effort was magical. It wasn’t just about reaching the answer; it was about knowing I had stretched my mind and grown stronger as a problem-solver.

Today, things are different. Students have access to endless resources: online videos, step-by-step guides, even AI tutors ready to offer solutions in seconds. While this is a gift, it also means fewer opportunities to wrestle with problems, fewer moments of quiet triumph when persistence finally pays off.

If there’s one message I’d like to pass on to today’s learners, it is this: don’t shy away from the struggle. Sit with it. Wrestle with it. Sleep over it if you must. Because often, the most valuable part of learning isn’t the solution itself—it’s the persistence and patience you build along the way.

Those struggles shaped me into the teacher I am today. And through #MathAcademy, I hope to pass on not just knowledge, but also the spirit of persistence and problem-solving—to help every student discover that they, too, can grow stronger through struggle.
